When it is sufficiently wet, the wooden pier is surrounded by water and makes a nice photo opportunity. Occasionally geese also stay here. As of October 2022, the water level is so low that the wooden jetty is only on one side of the water. In the Brackvenn you can also find numerous Palsen, also called Palsas. With a little background knowledge, these are easy to identify:
Palsas are very similar to pingos in their morphology and origin, but significantly smaller than pingos with heights between about 1 and 10 meters and lengths between about 15 and 150 meters.
The palsen or pingos in the High Fens were formed around 10,000 to 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. When the ground froze deep down during the cold winters of the Ice Age, the wet ground expanded and frost mounds developed. Over the years these mounds grew and the soil material that was on top slid down the sides of the mounds and over time formed a ring-shaped wall around Frost Mound. With the end of the ice age, the ice melted, the frost mound sagged and the wall was preserved. The water in the middle is called bog scour or bog eye.

The Brackvenn lies on both sides of the Monschauer Straße (N 67), which leads from Monschau to Eupen. The hiking trails are well signposted and there are always information boards along the wooden walkways.

North of the N 67, the Brackvenn is divided into Nahtsief and Puzen. Parts of the area have been renatured. At the northern edge of this area is the duck pond, a pingo or palsen, which was filled with water through drainage ditches in order to have water to extinguish fires in the fens.

South of the N 67 are the Venn areas Im Platten Venn, Hobbe and the Royal Peat Bog. There are several pals or "bog eyes" in this area. One of them, the Hellenketel, is close to the Nahtsief car park.

No peat was extracted in the royal peat bog and the original raised bog vegetation is still preserved. The area is therefore under strict nature protection and is not accessible.

In both parts of the Brackvenn there are several palsen (pingos). They were formed at the end of the last ice age around 10,000 to 11,000 years ago and consist of a round earth wall that surrounds a water hole, the so-called bog eye. These geologically interesting formations can be seen well on aerial photographs, e.g. on google-earth.

As in all Venn areas, there is a risk of fire in the event of prolonged drought. In such a case, a red flag is hoisted at the entrances to the Venn - entering the Venn is then not allowed.

The Brackvenn is part of the High Fens on the German border near Mützenich. The word brack is derived from wreck and means something like useless. This means useless area in which you can neither farm nor cattle or wood industry, as in the High Fens. But what was very possible here is the mining of peat. While the wealthy people of Eupen did not need to use peat as heating material, the Mützenicher were poor and thus used the Brackvenn. As a result, the vegetation of the Brackvenn, as in many parts of the Venn, has changed massively as a result of peat removal and drainage. The royal peat bog, which was separated from the Brackvenn by the 3.8 kilometer long Eupen border ditch and was part of Eupen at the time, still has real raised bog vegetation today.
