The Beelitz Heilstätten impress by the contrast ruin and renovation. The area is huge and you do not know where to look first.

The Beilitz-Heilstätten workers' lung sanatoriums, built between 1898 and 1930 by the Berlin State Insurance Institution, form one of the largest hospital complexes in the Berlin area. It is a listed ensemble of 60 buildings on a total area of approximately 200 ha.

In two areas north of the railway line, the pulmonary sanatoriums were established, in the two southern areas the sanatoriums for the treatment of non-infectious diseases. The areas were each separated by gender: west of the highway the women's sanatoriums and sanatoriums, east of the same men's sanatoriums and sanatoriums. Likewise, factory buildings, where women were predominantly employed, lay to the west and those in which men were employed to the east. The first construction phase took place from 1898 to 1902 under the architects Heino Schmieden and Julius Boethke (1864-1907). In the second construction phase from 1908 to 1910, the number of beds was increased from 600 to 1,200. The architect was Fritz Schulz, who was also responsible for the third construction phase 1926-1930.

After the end of the Second World War, in which the sanctuaries were partly severely damaged, the area was taken over in 1945 by the Red Army. The sanatoriums served until 1994 as the largest military hospital of the Soviet / Russian army abroad. It was also from December 1990, the whereabouts of Erich Honecker, who had liver cancer, before he and his wife Margot were flown out to Moscow on March 13, 1991.
