Why build a castle from the early 13th century in the 21st century?

Many questions about castle construction, the use of materials and the use of construction workers are still unanswered. By using the old tools and experimenting with the materials available on site, they hope to rediscover lost knowledge.

Guédelon is perhaps the most important construction site for experimental archaeology, but certainly the best known.

Great project - here is built with the means of the time a medieval castle. In this open-air museum, visitors can experience first-hand how the former craftsmen worked on their materials. During my visit, I had the feeling that due to the advanced construction at the moment, no special emphasis is placed on further construction progress, because a finished castle would indeed remove the project from its special charm. At the moment, the focus is more on the demonstration of certain working techniques.

Guédelon is a castle in Treigny-Perreuse-Sainte-Colombe.

It's a great experimental archeology castle building project.

Since 1997, authentic means from the 13th century have been used here.

The entrance fee is quite steep, but it's worth it.
