Mont-Saint-Michel always surprises. There's so much to say about it: a mystical place with its "marvel" (the cloister at the top of the mountain) and the golden statue of the Archangel Saint Michael slaying the dragon from the heights of the bay. La Mère Poulard and her famous omelet as well as its narrow streets add an authentic dimension. The shifting sands of the bay make it even more elusive. It's an ancient place of pilgrimage that attracts crowds but also a place that regains its tranquility once night falls.

Since the new pilgrimage jetty "Jetée du Mont-Saint-Michel" was completed in 2014, the way to the famous monastery island has been an experience in itself. The gradual rapprochement is perhaps even nicer than the hustle and bustle in the alleys under the church.

However, the footbridge is not only used for access. Together with a new tidal dam, which retains flood water and drains it again when the opportunity arises, it serves to sand the bay and counteract the gradual silting up.

The architecture of Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay make it the most frequented tourist site in Normandy and one of the ten most visited in France - first site after those of Île-de-France - with nearly two million and a half visitors each year (3,250,000 in 2006, 2,376,000 in 2018).

A statue of Saint Michael placed at the top of the abbey church rises 157.10 meters above the shore. A major element, the abbey and its outbuildings are classified as historical monuments by the 1862 list (60 other constructions were subsequently protected); the islet and the coastal barrier of the bay appear since 1979 on the list of the world heritage of UNESCO as well as the mill of Moidrey since 2007. In addition the mountain benefits from a second world recognition as a stage of the Paths of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France for "the pilgrims of the North of Europe (who) passed by the Mount when they went to Galicia".

In 2018, the town had 30 inhabitants, called the Montois. The islet of Mont Saint-Michel has become over time an emblematic element of French heritage.

Important for cyclists: Bicycles are allowed to use the path on the west side of the bridge overpass, which is also designated as the so-called Voie verte, but from May 1st to September 30th they are only allowed to use it before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. And: Parking bicycles is prohibited on the entire bridge overpass, on the esplanade and at the foot of the fortification walls. It is therefore less stressful to park your bike at the parking space at the barrage and continue the way to the Klosterberg (more meditatively) on foot or (comfortably and free of charge) with the shuttle bus.

We rode our bikes up to the mountain on the road. At the mountain, at the left entrance, there is a small place to park bikes. If this is full, bikes are parked outside.

Riding to Mont-Saint-Michel by bike is a very special experience. The last few kilometers of the cycle path along the Couesnon offer you spectacular views of the famous Mont-Saint-Michel, which rises majestically above the bay. If you set off early in the morning or after 6 p.m., you can use the cycle path in peace and quiet, as bicycles are not allowed here during the day during the high season.

Arriving at Mont-Saint-Michel is impressive: you cycle along the modern bridge, which opened in 2014 and replaced the old dam. It allows the Mont to be completely washed by water again. The wind in your face, the vastness of the bay and the view of the Mont make the last few meters fly by. But be careful: you have to leave your bike at the foot of the mountain - cycling is prohibited on the entire bridge overpass and on the Mont itself.

Once you have arrived, you can explore the monastery and the narrow streets on foot. The spiritual atmosphere of the Mont is particularly noticeable in the evening or early in the morning, when most of the tourists have left. You might also want to take a little break in one of the restaurants and try the famous omelette from La Mère Poulard - a culinary tradition of Mont-Saint-Michel.

On the way back, you can enjoy the sunset over the bay while cycling leisurely back

The "Mont" has become a major tourist attraction, visited by approximately 2.3 million people annually. The mountain and its bay have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. It is also being visited again, albeit on a smaller but growing scale, by pilgrims, including those on the Way of St. James. Therefore, it has been part of the World Heritage Site of the Ways of St. James in France since 1998.

Many of the buildings are listed as historic monuments and are included in the list of historic monuments at Mont-Saint-Michel. In addition to the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey, which can be seen from afar, the Mont Saint-Michel city fortifications, with their gates (Porte de l'Avancée), the King's Gate, and the Boulevard Gate, as well as numerous towers such as the King's Tower, the Arcade Tower, the Denis Tower (only the foundations of which remain), the Low Tower, the Boucle Tower, the North Tower, and the Enceinte des Fanils, along with the Gabriel Tower, are particularly characteristic of the appearance of Mont Saint-Michel. The village's Catholic church is the Church of St. Pierre, next to which is the Mont Saint-Michel Cemetery, which is also a listed monument. The cemetery features the Mont Saint-Michel War Memorial and the Cross of the Cemetery. The village itself also boasts numerous listed buildings, including the Hotel Saint-Pierre, the Maison de l'Artichaut, the Maison du Pot de Cuivre, the Maison Les Terrasses, the Vieux Logis, and the Villa Bellevue. Away from the village, directly on the coast, are the St-Aubert Chapel and the Saint-Aubert Fountain.
