The Veurnesluis is one of six works of art that together form the Ganzepoot near Nieuwpoort. Six waterways meet here and are connected to the North Sea. From north to south, the six works are: Overlaat van het Nieuwbedelf, Overlaat van het Nieuwbedelf, Overlaat van het Nieuwbedelf, Overlaat van het Nieuwbedelf, Overlaat van Veurne-Ambacht, and the Veurnesluis lock.

The original building dates from the second half of the nineteenth century. The building was completely destroyed during the First World War. After the war, the repair work started almost immediately.

The lock gives access to the Veurnevaart, and the canal connects Nieuwpoort with Dunkirk. Next to the lock is a spillway with four openings.

This relief canal is connected to the Noordvaart and the Slijkvaart. It regulates the drainage of the polders
van Ramskapelle and formed an important link
in the flooding in 1914 that gave a decisive turn to the First World War.
