The Evangelical City Church is the oldest religious building in Lüttringhausen that still exists today. Viewed from the west, it is the dominant building in the old town ensemble.

Story

There was a church at this point as early as 1300. A pastor by the name of "Johann, Kerckher zu Lütterkussen" is named for the year 1365. The church described above existed for the church village and the four monarchies Erbschloe, Hohemhagen, Walbrecken and Garschagen. During the Thirty Years' War the church was exposed to various acts of violence. It is reported that in 1634 Swedish troops forced their way into the church and smashed the "Schöffenkiste".

In 1627 the Jesuits seized the church for religious reasons. But the Lüttringhausen Protestants did not give up and held the services "in the Diepmannsbach". Whether the Swedish troops also expelled the Jesuits is not documented.

On the afternoon of New Year's Day 1703, a drunk dragoon named Giesbert Wolff rode into the church and disrupted the service. But strong man's fists put him in the air. The only reason the disturber escaped his punishment was that Lüttringhauser advocated leniency.

The original medieval church burned twice. After the fire in 1536 there was "great damage", which could be repaired. On July 25, 1733, however, it burned down completely, along with most of the village at that time. In 1734, it was decided to erect a building that was modern by the standards of the time over the rubble. The tower position in the west bore no resemblance to the burnt down church. The hall was raised to a length of 23.5 m and a width of 18.4 m and provided with a vaulted ceiling. Originally the "Church", as the cemetery used to be called, was located around the church building. The tower was damaged by a lightning strike in 1861, but it was soon restored. A date on the tower reminds of the renovation in the same year.

The church is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Bergisch Baroque and was built as a Reformation sacred building. The building has been structurally repaired and renovated several times over the past 60 years.
