The Hohenbudberg water tower was built in 1915/1916 by the Prussian railway administration to supply the Hohenbudberg marshalling yard and the railway settlement in Friemersheim. Today it is considered an industrial monument and is used as a studio, office and residential building.

"The Hohenbudberg double water tower was functionally part of the marshalling yard of the same name. Its task was to supply steam locomotives with water.

Steam engine principle: Steam locomotives work in a simplified manner by making a fire (stove) with (coking) coal, heating the water in a boiler and then using the resulting steam to move the pistons in the machine's cylinders. The locomotive then moves via rods and chassis etc.

The special architectural element of the 35 meter high tower is its two reinforced concrete storage tanks, which are positioned next to each other but structurally “encased” as a unit. The substructure is two tower shafts, which also stand out visually with their gray brickwork. The storage volume was 500 cubic meters per container.

With the end of the steam locomotive era in the first half of the 20th century - which was briefly revised again after the Second World War - the double water tower in Friemersheim also became unnecessary in the 1960s.

Afterwards, the Federal Railway Directorate and the LVR Office for Monument Preservation in the Rhineland allowed private use under certain conditions and the tower was handed over to an architect in 1978 for a symbolic price of 1 German mark. Today the range of uses extends from apartments, studios and offices in the tower shafts to rehearsal rooms in the former warehouse."
