The Carlo Medici refuge at Cassinelli is an excellent stopping point where you can take a break on the way up towards Presolana. For less trained people it can become a point of arrival where you can admire the queen of the Orobie. The area is well equipped with picnic benches and more or less flat spaces where you can relax in contact with nature.

The Carlo Medici ai Cassinelli refuge is located at 1568 m above sea level. in front of the southern face of the Presolana massif.

Originally it was a dairy used in the summer for sheep farming; at the beginning of the 60s the municipality of Castione della Presolana renovated the structure and then entrusted the management to the Clusone section of the CAI, which began to use it first as a social hut and later to open it to the public in the summer periods.

Since December 2013 it has been promoted to a refuge. Next to the refuge there is a mountain pasture structure with a pond for watering the herds.

Carlo Medici was the first Alpine Guide to conquer the Presolana.

On 3 October 1870 Medici made the first ascent to the summit of the Queen, with him two other names in Bergamo mountaineering: Federico Frizzoni and Antonio Curò, future president of the CAI of Bergamo.

The story of Carlo Medici did not stop here even if it remained forever linked to these mountains.

In front of the view of the Presolana, reachable after only 45 minutes of climbing from the Presolana pass and... for this reason very popular in summer, it is not recommended to go there at rush hour because you could find yourself in a queue with families, elderly people, dogs, screaming children and people who go to the mountains less than once a year without boots.
I recommend starting the climb early and heading towards higher and more peaceful destinations, or reaching the refuge in low season.
Unfortunately the refuge makes you pay dearly for the desserts, which are poor in both quality and quantity. There are also few benches... but eating a packed lunch nearby is a pleasant experience.

TOO busy refuge. Since it only takes 60 minutes to reach it, you risk queuing for parking and uphill. The path in the woods is beautiful, but I strongly advise against going there on Sundays (the gymkhana between dogs, grandparents, screaming children and people in sneakers struggling is really stressful).
Fortunately, beyond the refuge people don't want to go and sweat, so the paths are free, real mountain.
I don't recommend eating at the refuge, they served me a tart that tasted like a supermarket, a 5 euro slice, disappointment.
