    These natural karst caves are also called the Mauerner Höhlen. The caves have been inhabited or at least used as a shelter since the Paleolithic Age. During excavations, stone tools and animal bones that are over 27,000 years old have been found.

        The system, consisting of five individual caves, is located on the left slope at the entrance to the Wellheim Urdonautal valley, northwest of the village of Mauern. The seven cave entrances are located approximately 20 meters above the valley floor at approximately 425 meters above sea level.

        The area surrounding the caves is designated as the Mauerner Höhlen nature reserve.

        The total length of the cave system is 121 meters, with a total area of approximately 600 square meters. The caves are accessible via an unpaved footpath. Due to the risk of cave-ins and to protect against grave robbers, the entrances have been barred since 1977.

          The Mauern Caves, also known as the Weinberg Caves, were formed over millions of years. Karstification of the Jurassic and Malm rocks created cavities that acquired their present shape during the Ice Ages through the erosion of water and wind. They consist of five spacious individual caves.

          The significance of the caves was first recognized in 1935 by Michael Eckstein, a teacher and local cultural officer from Neuburg. Four scientific excavations led to a significant number of finds from prehistoric fauna and human habitation.

          The bone discoveries of cave hyenas, cave bears, and cave lions indicate the presence of these animals. Mammoths, woolly rhinoceros, reindeer, ibex, giant deer, and wild horses were native to the area.

          Hand axes and scrapers found during excavations, estimated to be approximately 70,000 years old, date back to the Neanderthal era. One notable find is a figure, approximately 7 cm tall, called "The Red of Mauern," dating back approximately 25,000 years. It displays both male and female sexual characteristics. Further finds from the Neolithic and Hallstatt periods attest to the continuous human use of the caves for millennia.
