The spring water of the Muschelquelle comes to light as a layer spring from marls of the Upper Jura. It deposits calcareous tuff that was mined for a time in a large area below the source. This was created in the warm period about 120,000 years ago. The spring house of the shell spring was built from these calcareous tuff stones in 1910, which was used until 1968 to supply drinking water to the surrounding villages.

The Muschelquelle is a karst spring near Streitberg, a part of the Upper Franconian market town of Wiesenttal in the Forchheim district in Bavaria.

The mussel spring is located in Franconian Switzerland northeast of Streitberg below the “Glatten Wand” in a narrow, rock-enclosed valley. At the upper end, next to the mussel spring, two other small springs arise, the water from which is fed into a Kneipp facility. The spring water from the Muschelquelle emerges as a layered spring from Upper Jurassic marls. Calcareous tuff is deposited, which was mined for a while in a large area below the spring. This was created in the warm period around 120,000 years ago. The spring house of the Muschelquelle was built from these lime tuff stones in 1910, which was used to supply drinking water to the surrounding towns until 1968. When the spring is very full, the water also rises from a spring grotto, the Schneiderloch, above the mussel spring. The source is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as a valuable geotope 474Q001[1] and a natural monument (ND-04593)[2].
