Gate tower of Friedestrom Castle in Zons.
Friedestrom Castle, which was often called Friedestrom Palace in the past, is a former Electorate of Cologne state castle in the Dormagen district of Zons.
The entire old town of Zons with its around 125 houses - which is well worth seeing - is located within the city walls of the heavily fortified fortress.
The castle, which lies directly on the flat left bank of the Rhine, was originally built as a moated castle. Today the moat has been drained.
The complex, secured with a city wall and various towers, served, among other things, to secure the Rhine toll collected in Zons, which is why it is also counted as a type of toll castle.
The castle was also intended to secure the Electorate of Cologne territory against the counts and later dukes of Berg.
It was built in the second half of the 14th century by Archbishop Friedrich III of Saarwerden.
The castle had its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries.
From the 17th century onwards, its gradual decline began, which was accelerated by damage during the Thirty Years' War.
During the Thirty Years' War, the complex fell into the hands of French troops who occupied the areas to the left of the Rhine.
In 1803, the castle was sold at auction and was subsequently used as a manor.
In 1972, the then Neuss district took over the castle and set up a cultural centre there.
Today, the castle houses a museum, the archives of the Neuss district and the city of Dormagen, an open-air stage and other rooms for events.
