                Bornhöved was first mentioned in 798, making it one of the oldest settlements in Schleswig-Holstein. There have been three military conflicts here, with the Battle of Bornhöved on July 22, 1227, having significant European repercussions.

                A "history trail," consisting of 31 historical stations, is signposted.

                The local museum "De ole Rökerkaat" provides detailed information about community events in changing exhibitions.

                On December 7, 2013, the "Swedish Peace" lasted 200 years. Since the last active military conflict between the Swedes took place near Bornhöved, this day was the occasion for a joint German-Swedish celebration. The foundation for the town's current significance was laid in 1149 with the completion of the church, which was extensively restored in 2001/2002.

                A diverse range of crafts and trades settled in Bornhöved itself. The town quickly grew to considerable size and held Lübeck city rights from 1299 to 1426. For centuries, the Estates Assembly for all of Holstein was held here. A memorial stone was dedicated at the Viernheim square in 2005 to commemorate this event.

                The state legislatures were only convened in Kiel from 1480 onwards.
