      New York and Plauen

      But what do Plauen and New York have in common?

      It is Fritz Cremer's sculpture “Ascending”.

      Cremer created the bronze sculpture in 1966/67 and the GDR donated it to the United Nations in 1975. Since then, the sculpture has stood in the park of the UN headquarters in New York.

      Fritz Cremer, a staunch communist, wanted the work to depict the quest for liberation and the rise of man becoming aware of his own role.

      A second cast of the sculpture was placed in Plauen in 1989 on a meadow below the summit of the Bärenstein. Next to it on a sign you can read that it is dedicated to the peoples fighting for their freedom.

            On the Bärenstein (432 m) in the immediate vicinity of the upper train station and only a few minutes' walk from the city park, a modern 35-metre-high observation tower was inaugurated in 1997. From a platform 24.3 meters high, visitors can enjoy a wonderful view of the city.

            There is a playground with a climbing combination, table tennis table and a football pitch on the Bärenstein site.

            Not far from the Bärenstein Tower is the city park - Plauen's local recreation area.

                From the tower's platform you have a wonderful view of Plauen and the surrounding area. As dusk fell, the panorama was particularly impressive.
                The climb should even be manageable for people with a slight fear of heights, as the staircase is fairly safe inside the tower.
                The view from above is a little... well... challenging.
