Very nice port gate with drawbridge in the south of Zierikzee.

Zierikzee has largely retained its medieval fortress shape. In the 14th century, the city was surrounded by a moat and wall. This wall was reinforced with about twenty, mostly semicircular, towers. Six gates gave access to the fortress. This also includes the Zuidhavenpoort, which was supposed to protect the southern port entrance.

The gate was built in the 15th century. The brick gatehouse has four corner towers. The dome turret was renovated in 1858. Suspended here is the oldest carillon in the Netherlands (1554), from the old town hall.

This gate is one of the three gates of Zierikzee and stands at the entrance of the old city harbor. This gate tower was built in the Middle Ages. The brick building has corner towers. The domed tower was renewed in 1858 and contains the oldest carillon in the Netherlands, which is mentioned historically until 1554. The Zuidhavenpoort is a landmark, a cultural heritage site, a national monument and a tourist attraction, with a white drawbridge in front of the gate.
