                                      The approximately 1 hectare Hahnenkammsee is located west of the town of Brücken at about 250 m above sea level on the northern Hahnenkamm ridge known as Hohe Mark. The mountain lake covers the bottom of the former quarry, which has been filling with rainwater since 2008. Entry to the site has been prohibited since then.
                                      In the 1970s, a quartzite quarry was set up on the southeastern slope of the Hohe Mark by the Central German hard stone industry to extract road gravel and road construction material and was later expanded to the northeast. Mica slate and quartzite slate from the Geiselbach formation were mined. Minerals such as garnet porphyroblasts were also found. ... Mining was stopped in 2007.
