    Canterbury Cathedral is the most famous Christian structure in England. Founded in 597, the cathedral was rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 and then largely rebuilt again in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. The cathedral is both a holy place and part of a World Heritage Site and is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. For opening times and more information, visit: canterbury-cathedral.org.

            From 1175 onwards, the new building was carried out by Wilhelm von Sens using stones from Kent (east end).

            In its first year of operation in Canterbury the old chancel was demolished. In the second year, Wilhelm developed the models for shaping the stones that were transported across the canal from his homeland, and he took care of the work equipment (winches, etc.). The stones were brought from France with great effort and effort because suitable quarries in southern England were only discovered later. The actual construction began after September 5, 1177. The entire construction of the Gothic choir was completed in two years. Then in 1178 a serious accident happened: Wilhelm fell from scaffolding.

              The three-aisled nave in the late Gothic Perpendicular style was built from 1378 on the foundations of the old Romanesque church building.

              The main entrance is at the southwest portal. The cathedral's carillon with 14 bells is housed in the tower above the portal. The northwest tower contains the Great Dunstan bell, which weighs 3.1 t.

              There is a baptismal font in the nave from 1639. The pulpit from 1898 is a beautiful piece of wood carving. On the north wall of the nave is the organ from 1980. A symbol of the Anglican Church is the compass rose in the floor of the nave. The rose was installed in the ship in 1988.

              The west windows in the ship are worth seeing. These windows date from the 12th century and depict 13 figures from the genealogy of Jesus Christ. You can also see eight kings from the Middle Ages and above them the twelve apostles.

                Canterbury Cathedral contains – among many other sights and treasures – the tomb of Thomas Becket (1118 to 1170), formerly Lord Chancellor to the King and Archbishop of Canterbury. He was murdered here in the cathedral by royalists as a result of a rift between the clergy on the one hand and the royal family on the other. Whether the destroyed and later rebuilt tomb actually still contains his remains is a matter of debate among experts. As a martyr (blood witness) for the Christian faith, Thomas Becket – also known as THOMAS OF CANTERBURY after the location of his bishopric – was canonized by Pope Alexander III just three years after his death.
