Cappenberg Castle is a former monastery that was closed as part of Prussian secularization. Later, Minister of State Baron von Stein bought the large property and thus saved it from decay. It now belongs to one of his descendants and there are numerous different exhibitions in the large buildings.

In 1122 the first Premonstratensian monastery in the German-speaking area was founded by the last Count Cappenberg on Cappenberg. The order of the Premonstratensians is an association of independent monasteries and is the largest Roman Catholic order of regulated canons. The count built a women's monastery in the neighborhood for his wife, daughter and sister, making Cappenberg a double monastery. The monastery building later fell victim to the Thirty Years' War. In the middle of the 17th century the new building was started, to which we owe today's uniform three-wing system. The monastery was dissolved in 1803, after almost 700 years of existence, and Cappenberg Castle fell into the possession of the Prussian state. Then in 1816 the former Minister of State Karl Freiherr vom und zum Stein bought the property, renovated it and saved it from deterioration. During the Second World War, Cappenberg Castle was used to store works of art. For example, the collection of the Museum for Art and Cultural History Dortmund and art treasures from various destroyed churches were relocated to Cappenberg to protect them from Allied bombing. Today the castle is privately owned by Count von Kanitz, a descendant of Karl Freiherr vom Stein.
