Like something out of a fairy tale, the high level of humidity that can be trapped in the dense forests of La Gomera, creates the perfect conditions for the Laurel tree, also called Laurisilva, to thrive in this subtropical environment.

The subtropical laurel forests are a relic of the park. They were also common in Europe and the Mediterranean region (southern Europe, northern Africa, and southwest Asia) during the Tertiary period. While in Europe the forests disappeared during the ice ages (in the Mediterranean during the last ice age), this plant community was able to partially survive on La Gomera, on the other Canary Islands, as well as on Madeira and the Azores (Macaronesian Islands).
