Everything arose, little by little, over the course of several centuries: In 1180, Überlingen received city rights from Emperor Friederich Barbarossa. The first trenches and ramparts are likely to have been dug during this time. Around 1300 the core of the old town was surrounded by a complete wall ring, which, still clearly recognizable, ran from today's train station to the current spa garden. Between 1450 and 1630 the building of the outer wall, which runs as a gorge around the entire old town, followed. Huge towers were built above the trenches, some of which still testify to the defensive strength of the city. Twice, during the Thirty Years' War, the defense system successfully withstood the onslaught and siege by the Swedish army. Almost the entire length of the moat is freely accessible. Footpaths lead through the gorges and partly to the surrounding hills. Together with the city garden in the west and the adjoining spa garden, the city moat today forms an attractive, must-see green belt around Überlingen.
