Rolderdingspel is an old area in central Drenthe. The ding game (also known as the ding pill) previously included the Christmas games Assen, Rolde, Grollo and Schoonlo. The eastern side of the sub-area lies on a spur of the Hondsrug, the Rolderrug. To the west of it is a lower area, originally bisected by streams. That is the location of the current Assen.
Rolderdingspil is centrally located on the Drents Plateau. It is a boulder clay landscape cut by stream valleys with a thin covering of sand in the east. Rolde, Grolloo and Schoonloo are located on the Rolderrug. In the west the area flattens out. The height differences go from the Rolderrug, more than 14 m, to the stream valleys of 5 to 6 m + NAP. The brook valley landscape of Rolde belongs to the National Beekdal and Esdorpen landscape Drentsche Aa. In the south are the large forests of the forestry areas Hooghalen, Grolloo and Schoonloo. The remaining area is agricultural area with mixed farms and a relatively large amount of livestock farming.
In the west, the Amelterbosch merges with the buildings of the eastern districts of Assen, east of the railway line.
