In the IJzer Tower you will find the Museum on the IJzer. It tells the story of the Belgian-German front during World War I through the stories of soldiers, refugees and civilians on both sides of the front.

From the top of the 84 meter high tower you have a wonderful panoramic view over Diksmuide and the Westhoek.

The IJzertoren in Diksmuide is a monument commemorating the Flemish soldiers who died during the First World War. The original tower was built between 1928 and 1930, but was blown up in 1946 because of its association with Flemish nationalist collaboration during the Second World War. The current tower, completed in 1965, is 84 metres high and bears the inscription "Nooit meer oorlog" (No more war) in four languages.
The IJzertoren houses the Museum aan de IJzer (Museum on the IJzer), which focuses on the themes of war, peace and Flemish emancipation. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the front region from the top of the tower.

The current IJzertoren in Diksmuide is not the first IJzertoren, but the second. During its existence, the tower was destroyed and rebuilt. To understand this turbulent history, we have to go back to the 1920s of the previous century.

The first pile of this Peace Monument was driven in 1951, and the first stone was laid in 1952.
The new crypt was inaugurated in 1958, the Tower in 1965.
The Yser Tower is +/- 84 m high, has 22 floors and houses the Museum aan de Yzer. Everything For Flanders, Flanders For Kristus.

Very nice historical site. Splendid view all over the Flemish region (mount Kemmel, Belgian coast, ....). City center nearby and opportunity to practice water sports or start an excursion on the river boat up to Nieuwpoort where the river Ijser joins the sea.

At the same time symbol or expression of Flanders' will for political independence (after the First World War).
The tower and its associated crypt are Unesco world heritage. The old tower was built after the First World War but was dynamited in 1945-1946. The PAX gate was built with the rubble of the old tower. A new tower (84m high and 462 steps) was built (1951-1965) with a new crypt and now contains a 22-storey museum about the First World War (1914-1918).
