The complex with its two defiant towers, the mighty curtain walls, the castle chapel and the buildings of the castle courtyard is well preserved and also in great demand as a film set. In a tithe register from Hersfeld Abbey between 881 and 899, Querfurt was first mentioned as a place subject to tithing, Curnfurt im Friesenfeld, and in a document from Emperor Otto II from 979 it was first titled castellum.
