Keep an ear out for the distinctive calls of moor frogs, especially during breeding season. The unique flora, including cotton grass, heather, and bog myrtle, also supports various insects and smaller wildlife.

The nature reserve features a reconstructed historical boardwalk (Bohlenweg) that replicates ancient paths used to traverse the boggy terrain. This is a tangible connection to the region's past, echoing the original Wittemoor timber trackway, which dates back to 135 BCE. Prehistoric wooden cult figurines were even discovered along the route of the original trackway, highlighting its deep historical and cultural importance.

The Observation Platform and the nature reserve are generally accessible year-round. However, seasonal conditions can significantly impact the experience. While the mysterious beauty of the moor is present in all seasons, drier periods are often recommended for more comfortable hiking due to potentially very wet and muddy conditions, especially in winter or after heavy rain. The unique flora is particularly vibrant in spring and summer.

The nature reserve offers several designated hiking trails ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 kilometers. Depending on your chosen route and pace, a walk or hike around the Observation Platform and through the moorland can typically take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours.
