The origins of Freudenberg Castle, also known as Freudenburg, date back to 1197. Here Bishop Heinrich III. build a residential tower from Berg.
In 1361, among other things, the ring wall and the palace were further built by Eberhard von Wertheim. Between 1497 and 1507, Count Erasmus von Wertheim carried out further expansion and expansion of the castle into a well-fortified fortress with an imposing Renaissance building. A bailey was built by massive embankments. The imposing four-story cannon tower on the Main side and an outwork to secure the southern side of the mountain were built. Another protective wall with three small round towers was placed in front of the Zwinger wall. The wall closed up to the southwestern gate, which was additionally secured by a closed interior and a tower.
Access to the main bailey was only possible after passing through a second and third gate.
In 1552 the castle was badly damaged in the Markgräfler war and with the extinction of the Wertheim family in 1556 the castle progressively decayed. The administration was moved to the city and only the cannon tower (especially in the witch trials after 1590) continued to be used as a prison. At the end of the Middle Ages, the castle fell into disrepair and was overgrown with undergrowth and trees. She was forgotten for centuries. Only after the Second World War did a citizens' initiative campaign for the castle. It was gradually uncovered and renovated and returned to the public in 1995 in renewed condition. At the moment (as of 2012) the city walls and the cannon tower are being renovated. (Source: Wikipedia)
