The Digelfeld is home to the largest contiguous juniper heath in the Swabian Alb biosphere region. It covers around 121 hectares.
Juniper heaths developed on the Swabian Jura around 1000 BC. Today's Digelfeld is one of the few remains of these early juniper heaths. The Digelfeld is oriented to the south and west and was not very attractive for agriculture because of the slope and the thin layer of humus. It was therefore mainly used as a pasture for sheep. Without this use, it would probably no longer be a heathland today. Where grazing by sheep is no longer carried out, the area gradually becomes bushy and forest is formed again. In the case of the Digelfeld juniper heath, it is predominantly pine forest. An important concern of the Swabian Alb biosphere reserve is the preservation of the juniper heath as a habitat for rare plants and animals. The semi-arid grassland in the juniper heath is now one of the most endangered in Germany. Here you will find gentians, orchids, pasque flowers and common thyme, as well as many other rare plants. 266 animal species have been identified in the Digelfeld, 84 of which are protected and 19 are on the Red List of Endangered or Endangered Species. The great gray shrike, a small bird that is now only found in the Black Forest and Swabian Jura in Baden-Württemberg, is an example of this. But rare butterfly species can also be found on the Digelfeld, such as the blue-black kingfisher and the imperial mantle.
