The wooden cross was erected to commemorate German reunification on October 3, 1989. The suggestion for this came from churches in the surrounding communities of Hüttenheim and Seinsheim. The words "In the cross there is peace" are engraved on the crossbeam. The spot on the plateau of the Hüttenheim Tannenberg was ideal because the cross can be seen from very far away. The market town of Willanzheim erected the directional spider on the pedestal of the Tannenberg cross and set up a seating area. In October 1999, the Evangelical Lutheran pastor Berthold from Nenzenheim, pastor Götschel from Hüttenheim and the Catholic pastor Hornung from Seinsheim planted an apple tree next to the Tannenberg cross. The occasion was the Augsburg Declaration of the Churches on the Doctrine of Justification.
