The ruins of the Bullenheim Kunigunden chapel towers over the vineyards of Bullenheim. The origin of this former late Gothic chapel is in the middle of the 15th century. What is certain is that the current ruins replaced a previous building that fell into disrepair in 1474.

From the Kunigunden chapel it is possible to continue to the Bullenheim observation tower. The 15 meter high observation tower above the tops of the Kunigunden Forest offers a panoramic view far into the Rhön, to Würzburg, Rothenburg and Nuremberg. The tower is only open on Sunday afternoons, on weekdays the key is available in the Weinparadiesscheune, very close by, or in the Gasthof Zur Sonne in Bullenheim.

The Kunigunde Chapel is a church ruin that was consecrated to St. Kunigunde of Luxembourg. It is located in 🌳🌲🌳 approx. 300 m east above the vineyards near Bullenheim in Middle Franconia. The ruin is a popular hiking destination with a beautiful view of the Uffenheim (= Gollach) and Ochsenfurt Gau as well as the southern Main Triangle. You can see them from afar.

The largest vineyard area of Middle Franconia extends in the district of this wine-growing town. The location is called "Bullenheimer Paradies" - the cradle and namesake of the "Weinparadies Franken".
The ruins of the Kunigunden chapel on Bullenheimer Berg are visible from afar. This late Gothic building is stone evidence of a legend that Empress Kunigunde and her entourage got lost here in the forest about 1000 years ago. The ringing of bells from the valley gave them back their bearings. The pious woman had a chapel built in gratitude for the rescue.
Nearby, the observation tower from “Oberding” 456 m above sea level overlooks the Kunigunden Forest. From there, the view sweeps far across the mixed forest into the open valley. The Bullenheimer Berg had its first big bloom in the Celtic period.

On the Bullenheimer Berg, a short distance from the Weinparadiesscheune and the Weinparadies hiking trail, are the ruins of the Kunigunden Chapel. From there you have a beautiful view. There is an information board and benches.

The following legend surrounds the ruins of the Kunigunden Chapel: (From Klarmann and Spiegel, “Legends and sketches from the Steigerwald”)
“The Empress Kunigunda, or, as she is also called, the holy woman Kunigund, who is buried in her residence city of Bamberg with her husband Henry II, once wanted to travel to Würzburg. But in the Franconian mountains she and her entourage got off the path and wandered through the wild mountain forest at night. At that time, the night in the mountain forest was full of dangers and so the Empress made a vow that she would build a chapel in thanks at the place where God let her see the first signs of a human habitation. And lo and behold, immediately afterwards a light appeared and a bell rang. It was high time; they were on the highest point of a steeply sloping mountain. Light and the sound of bells came from the nearby village of Bullenheim, which lay far below. True to her vow, the Empress had a chapel built on this mountain ledge.
