Located in the commune of Nérac, in the French department of Lot-et-Garonne, the Château de Nérac is a building in the style of Louis XII and represents the transition between Gothic art and the First Renaissance.

Completed during the reign of Jeanne d'Albret , who held her court there, the castle was dismantled during the French Revolution .

The north wing, the only one that has survived [ 1 ] , was classified as a historical monument [ 1 ] , [ 2 ] in 1862. It now houses the Nérac Museum , dedicated to the Albret family and the Renaissance in general.

On the foundations of an old Gascon fortress, the castle was built in the 15th century by Alain d'Albret le Grand, Henri IV's great-grandfather. Became a royal residence with the accession of the Albrets to the throne of Navarre in 1484, the castle housed several prestigious courts in the 16th century, including those of Marguerite d'Angoulême, Jeanne d'Albret, Henri de Navarre and his wife Marguerite de valois.

The castle thus bears witness to the heyday of the Albret family during the Renaissance , a real royal court

where the most diverse distractions mingle, walks, hunts, lectures, theater performances and balls.

The Château de Nérac is not far from the town hall. It is open to the publicevery day, from 10am to 6pm . In July and August it is possible to have guided tours of the castle, you should count on 4€ for adults , 3€ for reduced rates and free for children under 12 years.
