    Not only the castle is worth seeing but also the barrel, formerly the vanishing point of the surrounding villages. Below is still a campsite with a beautiful natural swimming pool, which is a welcome cooling off. Also, the neighboring inn is recommended.

      Lichtenberg Castle
      Little is known about the origins of Lichtenberg Castle, which stood on the site of today's castle in the Middle Ages. Count Diether III. (Count von Katzenelnbogen between 1190 and 1214) married a Bertha von Lichtenberg, this could indicate an already existing castle in Lichtenberg. The first documentary mention of Lichtenberg is assumed to be in the year 1228: Count Diether IV. von Katzenelnbogen called himself comes (Count) de Lichtenberg at the district court in Heppenheim. In general, it is assumed that it was created around 1200. It is also assumed that the castle was built before 1254 by Count Diether IV von Katzenelnbogen. A document from 1295 has been preserved, in which Count Palatine Rudolf, as feudal lord, allowed Count Wilhelm von Katzenelnbogen to bequeath Lichtenberg Castle and its accessories to his wife Irmengard as a dowry.

                                  The Counts of Katzenelnbogen had already maintained a castle here. When they died out in 1479, the inheritance passed to the Landgraviate of Hesse. When the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt was permanently established in 1567 through the great division of the Hessian inheritance, there was a lot of new building activity in the Darmstadt area. From 1570 to 1581, Lichtenberg Castle was built in the Renaissance style in place of the old castle complex (but with the inclusion of some components) under the master builder Jakob Kesselhut on behalf of the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, Georg I. Hunting lodge, summer residence, widow's residence - much of the stately courtly life took place here. The building complex was used less and less by the following generations. However, the building fabric of the Renaissance period from the 16th century was preserved.
                                  For hikers, the castle is a striking landmark that can be easily seen from many places. Conversely, there is also a wide view from the castle terrace, especially into the Fischbach valley.
