In the Highest Forest of Steinbach the miner Johann Kuhn built a small Marian Grotto at the location of today's Marien-Kapelle in 1910 because of a dream. He dreamed that there had suddenly stood in front of him during the Holzfällen, which had announced on questioning that he would live only two months. He then vowed to set up a "small souvenir" in the High Forest, if he could find time and he would stay alive until his children could earn their own bread. When he retired, he secretly built the grotto.

Soon after their construction many visitors came daily to the always decorated with flowers grotto. But who then had the idea to build a chapel, can not be clarified. It must have been in early 1928, when the construction site was created, because in March this year Pastor Wüsten was reprimanded in writing for felled trees.

On July 29, 1928, the laying of the foundation stone was celebrated.

The blessing ceremony on August 15, 1929 (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) became the first major pilgrimage festival in Höchsten with a crowd of "thousands" filling the forest, according to Pastor Wüsten.

The small grotto on the left steep path to the chapel is still reminiscent of Johann Kuhn.

The chapel is located in the Steinbacher Gewann "Höchster Wald", 405 m above sea level and can accommodate up to 40 people.

Later, below the chapel, there arose the pilgrimage with seating for 400 people, the shrines with the "Seven Sorrows of Mary", the Francis Fountain and the Lourdes Grotto with the great statue of the Virgin Mary.

The custom is that a holy mass is read every first Wednesday of the month and every Wednesday in the morning women's groups come to the chapel, known as the "Wednesday whirlwinds". In the last years, the much visited "Höchster Kirmes" at the "Cafe Waldfrieden" has developed from the Wednesday whores of the parish Limbach. The proceeds of this event, which takes place on the first Wednesday in August, benefit the mission.

The construction of the Highest Chapel has become a place of prayer for people who, in silent prayer or in the Christian community, receive the blessing, comfort and hope of St. Maria looking for. So it is still understood and used by the numerous visitors.
