The Rhododendron ferrugineum, also known as the rusty-leaved alpine rose, is a species of plant in the heather family. In the Alpine region it is also known as the alpine rose in addition to the ciliated alpine rose. It is widespread in the mountains of Europe. The rust-leaved alpine rose grows as an evergreen dwarf shrub or shrub and reaches a height of 30 to 130 centimeters. The branches and twigs are heavily branched. The bark of young twigs is reddish-brown, while it turns gray on older twigs and branches. It has been found that stems with a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters can live almost 100 years.

The alpine rose blooms from May to July. The flowers are in terminal, umbel-like inflorescences that contain 5 to 8 millimeters long stalked flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers have a double perianth. The petals are deep pink to bright red and grow broadly funnel-shaped. The capsule fruits ripen from August and open from top to bottom. They contain many light, flat seeds that are dispersed by the wind.
