The almost circular lake Bolsena with a diameter of about twelve kilometers is a crater lake and volcanic origin. It is surrounded by the Monti Volsini, a low chain of dormant volcanoes. According to Roman records, the last volcanic eruption in this area took place around 104 BC. Although the lake is almost exclusively fed by rain and groundwater, it has very clear water and visibility down to ten meters. In many places of the lake you have free access to the shore - and you can swim for pleasure or lie in the sun. Black, volcanic tuff-shaped sandy beaches still bear witness to the volcanic past of the lake.
