In the context of the expansion of the garden, the Monopteros was built in 2001 as the dominant viewpoint and the optical center of the new garden.

The classic Greek round temple was taken up in the so-called English landscape gardens of the 18th century as an Arcadian motif. They were dedicated to Apollo or the Genius Loci. Also in Hohenheim there was such a Monopteros scene.

Based on the historical model, the architect H.D. Schaal a double column ring as a crowning of the lookout hill in the 1996 to 2000 garden extension.

From here the view extends over the Körschtal to the Scharnhäuser Park, where a counterpart to the Monopteros stands: a "Amortempel", the Duke Carl Eugen together with the Schlössle "CaroloOtio", i. Carl at leisure, built in 1783.

Originally located below in the valley, the temple was relocated in 1822 under King William I, because it stood in the way of the expansion of the royal stud farm.
