First Berlin "People Mover" in operation

Last Friday (June 15, 2007) Berlin's first "People Mover" was inaugurated after 6 months of construction. It connects forecourt and platform of the S-Bahn station Rummelsburg operating station of the line S3.
The peculiarity: the elevator only moves vertically upwards, then crosses the S-Bahn track in the direction of Ostkreuz and then drops vertically back onto the platform level. The ride in the 1.90 x 1.40 meter cabin takes 35 seconds. The towers are 9.80 meters (platform) and 11.19 meters (forecourt) high and are connected by a 10.25 meter long bridge.
Maintenance, servicing and technical supervision are provided by ThyssenKrupp on behalf of Deutsche Bahn AG. The € 890000 construction costs are shared by the Bund and DB AG. Approximately 5400 passengers use the S-Bahn station Rummelsburg every day.
