    Five kilometers from Sagres rises the mythical Cape St. Vincent, the last glimpse of solid ground for explorers setting sail towards the unknown of the vast ocean.

    Wild, windy, and imposing, this promontory of steep cliffs plunges steeply into the Atlantic, crowned by one of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe.

    Called Promontorium Sacrum by the Romans, the "end of the world" was for centuries a sacred place, shrouded in legends and mysteries. Today, it continues to be a point of pilgrimage for navigators, hikers, and dreamers, where the horizon seems to dissolve into infinity.

        The easiest way to get to Cabo de São Vicente is by using your own vehicle or one of the tourist buses that leave from the resorts of the Algarve. Parking is available just a few meters from the lighthouse complex. If you long for German cuisine, you will find a bratwurst stand in the parking area with the inscription "Last Bratwurst vor Amerika". The village Sagres is about six kilometers.

          The cape has been a sacred site since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by menhirs (stone formations) in the area. In Phoenician times it is said to have been dedicated to the deity Melkart.[1] The Greeks called the place Ophiussa (land of snakes) and its inhabitants Oestrimni (inhabitants of the extreme west), the Romans called it Promontorium sacrum (Holy Promontory), as a magical place at the end of the world where the gods live and the sun sinks into the sea.

          The Christians named the tip of the coast after Saint Vincent of Zaragoza, a patron saint of seafarers. According to legend, the corpse of the martyr was driven in a boat and recovered there in the year 304.[2]
