The building and the property are a typical example of the so-called "free courtyards" that ministerial nobles could erect behind walls and ramparts on the edge of the old town in the service of the sovereign.
The simple but well-proportioned house was built in 1532 by Otrave von Landsberg in the style of the Weser Renaissance and by Joh. Friedr. von Landsberg renewed in 1731 (coat of arms above the portal and on the back). The building now houses the extensive, 100-year-old city library. The city archive is located in the former barn from 1600.
