The Passau Bishop Georg von Hohenlohe († 1423) began the construction of a moated castle, which his successor Leonhard von Laiming completed in 1426. In the years 1581 to 1583, Prince-Bishop Urban von Trennbach had the building expanded into a representative Renaissance palace.

The castle was until the 19th century seat of episcopal orderlies. Occasionally the prince-bishops also stayed here, for example in 1680, when a city fire devastated the residence. After the secularization in 1803/1806, the state of Bavaria took over the building and used it as an office building. The old gate tower was demolished in 1816. 1975 to 1977, the castle was fundamentally restored and made accessible to the public as a ceramic museum.
