Gmünd was founded in the 11th or 12th century AD as an outpost of the Archdiocese of Salzburg to protect the Katschberg saddle and was first mentioned in a document in 1252.
Gmünd was granted town rights in 1346 and is, after Friesach, the second oldest documented medieval town in Carinthia.
In 1773, the Gmünd district court executed Eva Faschaunerin, a poisoner who confessed under torture, as the last victim of an Austrian witch trial.

The first models of the Porsche 356 and its design basis, the 356 No. 1 Roadster, were built at the Porsche factory in Gmünd until 1950.

In recent decades, a cultural and artistic group with a diverse cultural offering has established itself in Gmünd, which is supported by the city administration.
