The Gradierwerk, which was built by the Prussian state between 1756 and 1765 (interrupted by the Seven Years' War) to increase the salinity of the brine in the immediate vicinity of the Elmener brine springs, originally had a length of 1323 meters.
The plant, which was a technical masterpiece, was eventually extended to 1837 meters, making it the largest ever built graduation tower.
Today there are about 320 meters left. The graduation works today exclusively for outdoor inhalation.

The graduation tower is part of the "Kunsthof Bad Salzelmen" museum founded in 1999. The museum also includes the brine tower, with an underground passage to the Viktoriaquelle, the show house with medieval boiling plant, where salt is still produced in the manufactory, as in the Pfannlichen Saline, and the red house with a small exhibition. There is also the tourist information office, where you can buy lots of information, tickets and souvenirs as well as all-natural, hand-boiled salt, which is really delicious. From Tuesday to Sunday, entertaining and exciting tours of the Kunsthof take place at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and in summer also at 5 p.m. You can also climb the graduation tower and enjoy the view, from there you can even see Magdeburg Cathedral. For groups of 10 or more people (or you pay for 10), individual tours are possible at almost any time, of course only after registration. The guided tours are recommended for all age groups, when kids are in the group they are well involved, can visit the spa park witch, want something at the wishing fountain, taste brine and much more.

From there you can also walk or cycle to the Bierer Berg, there is a wonderful little home animal garden, great playground, gastronomy and an amphitheater, and every year the Schönebecker Operetta Summer with the Central German Chamber Philharmonic takes place there.
