The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Johannis in Schwerin is the only medieval building in the state capital. It is also the only real cathedral in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Das imposante Meisterwerk der Backsteingotik ist das älteste Bauwerk der Stadt Schwerin, hat mit 117,5 m den höchsten Kirchturm in Mecklenburg und ist die einzige echte Kathedrale des Landes. Der Dom ist täglich geöffnet. Wer die 220 Stufen des Turms erklimmt, den empfängt ein atemberaubender Blick über die Schweriner Seenlandschaft.

Den ursprünglich romanischen Dom hatte Heinrich der Löwe gestiftet. Als Pilgerkirche, in der ein Tropfen heiligen Blutes verehrt wurde, war der romanische Bau schnell zu klein. Daher wurde er später in eine gotische Kathedrale umgebaut. Mit 105 Metern Länge und einer Gewölbehöhe von 26,5 Metern gehört sie zu den größten Werken der Backsteingotik. Automatisch schweift der Blick der Besucher nach oben, denn seine mächtigen Pfeiler aus Backstein scheinen direkt in den Himmel zu streben. Für einen Turm reichte es im Mittelalter allerdings nicht. Er wurde erst 700 Jahre später errichtet und 1893 vollendet. 117,5 m misst der Turm des Baumeisters Georg Daniel. Und der halbe Meter ist entscheidend, denn um diesen überragt der Schweriner Dom die Kirche St.Petri in Rostock. - Die vielleicht wichtigsten 50 cm von Schwerin.

Im Dom führen 220 Stufen zur Besucherplattform. Sie bietet einen atemberaubenden Blick über Stadt, Schloss und Seen. Auf dem Weg nach oben passiert der Besucher fünf Glocken, von denen die älteste aus dem Jahr 1363 stammt. Im Innern imponieren der gotische Kreuzaltar, das Bronzetaufbecken von 1325 sowie das Triumphkreuz von 1420. An der prächtigen Ladegastorgel mit ihren 5100 Zinnpfeifen spielen alljährlich Organisten aus aller Welt. Der tiefe, satte Klang der Orgel durchdringt jede Faser.

Bemerkenswert sind auch die Grabmäler mehrer Herzöge. Darunter die Ruhestätte von Großherzog Friedrich Franz II. sowie das Epitaph für Herzog Christoph von Mecklenburg und dessen Gemahlin Elisabeth von Schweden.
Märchenhafte Spiele des Sonnenlichtes spenden die zahlreichen bunten Glasfenster.
Führungen (unter anderem Spezialführungen für Blinde und Sehbehinderte) können auch über die TOURISTINFORMATION oder die Domgemeinde angemeldet werden.
Der Dom überragt den Marktplatz von Schwerin und ist aus keiner Richtung zu verfehlen. Es ist empfehlenswert die Parkhäuser der Stadt zu nutzen (ca. 500 m fußläufig) oder den nahen Parkplatz "Grüne Straße" (ca.400m).
