The approximately 25-hectare Schwerin palace garden is one of the most beautiful baroque gardens in northern Germany. The Schwerin Palace Garden was originally laid out as a pleasure garden based on the French model.

From 1748 it was given its present form. This includes the cross channel, which was created as the centerpiece according to designs by the garden architect Jean Legeay. In the middle of the 19th century, the park was then expanded to include greenhouse gardens, kitchen gardens and the riparian zones based on the English model.

The spacious park south of the castle, connected by a bridge. Worth to stay, walking and cycling, which is quite permissible. Generous view axes and small sections with plenty of water are worth looking at and relaxing.

The castle garden stretches from the Schweriner and the Burgsee in the north to the lazy lake in the south. Centrally located is located in a line of sight to the castle cross channel. Formerly designed by Peter Joseph Lenné in the style of an English landscape park, the Greenhouse Garden at BUGA 2009 featured horticultural art of several centuries. The theme of tomb design and monument, a hedge garden and a children's playground based on a historical model were also offered.

The garden of the 21st century comprised the grounds around the Burgsee and was the entrance and reception area of the Federal Garden Show. The lake was extended from April to August 2007 by dredging in a southerly direction. The main attraction was a seemingly "floating meadow" due to its position between the lake and a ditch, and its rectangular shape with straight ridges. This is connected by a bridge with the geometrically Robinien planted place on the bank.

Schwerin Palace Garden and Castle Garden
With avenues, arcades, flower beds, groves, sculptures, and the Cross Canal, the Palace Garden presents itself as an impressive garden monument in the Baroque style.
The Palace Garden in Schwerin is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Northern Germany. Originally designed as a pleasure garden based on the French model, it underwent its distinctive design from 1748 onwards. Based on designs by the landscape architect Jean Legeay, the Cross Canal was created as its centerpiece, adorned with sculptures from the workshop of the Saxon court sculptor Balthasar Permoser.
The Palace Garden was expanded around the middle of the 19th century according to plans by Lenné. The basic Baroque structure was retained, while the surrounding area, the greenhouse garden, kitchen gardens, and the riverside areas, were landscaped according to English models. The garden was largely spared from an intended conversion into a public park in the second half of the 20th century. Today, it covers approximately 25 hectares.
Anyone strolling through the palace gardens simultaneously embarks on a journey through the eras of princely garden design. Originally designed as a pleasure garden based on the French model, the stunningly beautiful Baroque garden, lined with avenues, is the focal point of the complex. Rustling arcades and the cross canal lead to the cascades. The symmetry of the sightlines is even continued by Permoser's numerous sculptures.

The extensions to the palace gardens, designed by the famous Prussian garden director Peter Joseph Lenné, also reflect the historical design ideals of stately parks. In the style of English landscape gardens, the Greenhouse Garden
and the southern palace garden, with its hippodrome, maze, and majestic trees, contrast strikingly with the Baroque grounds.

The Schwerin Palace Garden is the annual focus of Schwerin's cultural and garden summer. Whether during the Palace Festival, the Gourmet Garden, or the Palace Garden Festival. This is also home to the open-air stage, where numerous concerts take place during the warmer months against the impressive backdrop of the castle.

The arcades of Schwerin's palace gardens offer the most beautiful shady spots in the entire Baroque complex. In 1862, Court Garden Director Theodor Klett commissioned the magnificent hornbeam tunnels that lead from both sides of the equestrian monument to the northern end of the Kreuzkanal.

The palace garden is the most important Baroque garden in Northern Germany. It continues to unfold its splendor over 33 hectares to this day. With the Kreuzkanal (cross canal) reflecting the palace, the avenues, groves, the picturesque large grotto, pavilions and water features, arcades, the hippodrome, and the lawn cascade, featuring the Baroque sculptures by Baltasar Permoser, it offers the experience of an ideal combination of architecture, nature, and art. The large park, created between 1840 and 1858, was designed by the court architect Peter Joseph Lenné. His redesign incorporated the Baroque garden, designed by Jean Legeay in 1748 based on a French model, and expanded the area into the large palace park, extending to the shores of the three surrounding lakes. Approximately 150 hectares were lost due to development, the establishment of the zoo, and forest encroachment.

After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II – the builder of the palace in Schwerin – his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed through donations. It is considered the only historical equestrian statue in all of Mecklenburg.
The work by Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as all those of rank and name in the Mecklenburg court nobility. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed in the typical, mostly military style of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a more than 4 m high marble pedestal.
The pedestal is surrounded by allegories of the four sovereign virtues: strength, justice, wisdom, and faith. Two commemorative plaques depict events from the reign of Frederick Francis II—the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument survived two wars and two dictatorships with great luck. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the war, and scrapped.

The Schwerin Palace Garden is an impressive example of historical garden design and ranks among the most beautiful parks in Northern Germany. Picturesquely situated between Schwerin Palace and the castle lake, it forms a harmonious whole with the palace complex. Its origins date back to the 18th century, when the first Baroque gardens were created under Duke Christian Ludwig II. In the 19th century, the garden was redesigned in the style of an English landscape garden by order of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. This combination of Baroque formality and natural landscape features continues to give the palace garden its special charm.

Expansive lawns, winding paths, flowerbeds, and old tree-lined avenues invite visitors to stroll and linger. Particularly worth seeing are the artistic sculptures, the romantic bridges, and the magnificent orangery, which once housed exotic plants. The water features and ponds also reflect the garden designers' love of symmetry and perspective. From many vantage points, breathtaking views of Schwerin Castle unfold, majestically perched on an island and reflected in the waters of the castle lake.

Today, the Schwerin Castle Garden is not only a place of peace and relaxation, but also a significant cultural monument. It is regularly used for concerts, art events, and festivals, attracting visitors from all over the world. With its blend of history, nature, and aesthetics, the garden conveys a vivid picture of courtly life from centuries past – and remains a vibrant part of the state capital, Schwerin.
