When Bottrop experienced strong population growth in the 19th century, the Protestants who moved there founded their own parish in the middle of the century. In 1884 they built the city's first Protestant church, which was dedicated to Martin Luther.
Centrally located on the Pferdemarkt in the historic city center, St. Martin's Church is a dominant urban feature. The community built the building with the help of private and industrial donations.
