SALINE GOTTESGABE

Salt, the "white gold" from Bentlage, was a highly sought-after commodity for centuries, which was transported along the salt road to the salt farm in the bishop's city of Münster and traded from there.

Salt production in Bentlage goes back far into the Middle Ages. In the monastery period under the Knights of the Cross, salt was initially extracted for personal use. With the saltworks society founded by Prince-Bishop Clemens August, the saltworks were fundamentally modernized from 1743 onwards under the leadership of the princely master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun and the well-known saltworks specialist Joachim Friedrich von Beust. The extensive saltworks complex with the once almost 300-meter-long graduation tower dates back to the heyday of salt production, the first such facility in Westphalia. In 1890, the bathing and spa operation was opened in addition to the existing saltworks operation. The bathing operation became the second pillar of the saltworks.
