To the northeast of Markteinersheim, Speckfeld Castle was built around 1200 by the Counts of Speckfeld on the old Nuremberg-Würzburg-Frankfurt Reichsstrasse (today's B 8). It was first mentioned in a document in 1226.
In 1412 Elisabeth von Hohenlohe gave the castle to the Limpurg taverns. Destroyed and plundered several times (in 1525 in the Peasants 'War and by the Swedes during the 30 Years' War in 1618/48), the castle was abandoned in 1693. The Limpurg taverns move into their new castle in Einersheim.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Rechtern-Limpurg-Speckfeld, but it was falling into disrepair. Today only a 15 m high wall of the former gate tower remains of the castle. The castle cellar is still inhabited: bats regularly hibernate here.

Unfortunately, only the remains of a tower have survived from the former castle. But the location was well chosen at the time, because to this day you have a nice view from up here. Benches and a new rest area invite you to take a break.

The name of the castle ruins comes from the so-called "Specke", as a stick dam is called in Markt Einersheim. A bacon was the prerequisite for building a castle there, as a damp meadow had to be overcome.
This is indicated on the information board at the foot of the ruin.

Do Not Enter! The castle ruin is closed because of collapse danger.

The castle ruins Speckfeld near Iphofen should be included in a hike, even if not much is left of the former castle complex except for a 15 meter high wall gap and a few arches, there is also a sign prohibiting entry due to the danger of collapse.

To the northeast of Einersheim, near Iphofen, lies the Speckfeld ruin on a freestanding, densely wooded mountain cone, also known as the Schlossberg.

Not much is left of this once mighty castle. At first glance, there is only a 15 meter high wall with 3 window openings and an archway. It is a side wall of the former gate tower, which was also the keep.

If you wander around on the overgrown area, you will also find the castle cellar. A huge deep hole indicates that the cellar ceiling has collapsed here. Here and there you can also find smaller remains of the vault. The moat can still be seen on three sides. The former castle fountain can also still be found.

Since the restoration work in the early 1990s, the ruin has been left to its own devices again and is completely surrounded by the wilderness. A very romantic castle ruin, hidden deep in the forest. So you can find some peace here, far away from civilization and tourism.

1168 Start of construction and more ...
Built around 1250 by the Counts of Speckfeld, then owned by Hohenlohe
In 1412 the castle became the property of the Limpurg taverns
In 1525 it was destroyed in the Peasants' War, but was later restored
1618-48 during the Thirty Years' War multiple plundering both by Swedes and by imperial families.
From 1693 onwards, the castle is no longer inhabited, as the owners built a new castle in Markt Einersheim.
In 1713 the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Rechtern-Limpurg-Speckfeld. Over the years and decades, the castle begins to fall into disrepair and is gradually being torn down and used as a quarry.
In 1991, for example, the last remains of the castle ruins, which have been in the possession of the Bavarian state for some time, are being restored.

The castle was probably built around the year 1200.
The castle ruins are owned by the Bavarian State Forests and the remains of the castle have been restored since 1991. The castle site is registered as an architectural monument “Speckfeld Castle Ruins” and as a ground monument “Medieval and Modern Speckfeld Castle Ruins” by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.

Here you walk through a beautiful mixed forest to the ruin. Don't forget Autan or something similar. The mosquitoes were really annoying.

The 🏰 of the bacon fields
One might associate a resident with a coronation goblet or a Reichstaler - but with a "bacon"? In Markt Einersheim there was a bacon, a so-called. Knüppeldamm, the prerequisite for being able to build a 🏰 at all, because a damp meadow had to be overcome on the way there. Around 1200 the knights of Speckfeld built their new headquarters on the 🏰berg. Cups and talers found their way into the Limpurg family in the 15th century through their marriage to Elisabeth von Hohenlohe.
At the time of the Reichserbeschenken, the 🏰 Speckfeld experienced an up and down: Peasants' War 1525, reconstruction under Schenk Carol, great 🔥 1558, Thirty Years War, renewed renovation.
It was not until the Schenken Vollrath moved to the new 🏰 in the valley in 1685 that the 🏰 lost its importance as a mansion. Large parts were removed, and the 🏰 gradually fell into ruin.

Unfortunately, only the wall with the window is left of the ruin. There is a ban on entering the entire site due to the risk of collapse. In this area, nature should be able to expand again undisturbed and the old wall remnants should be brought back. Still interesting and worth seeing.
