The beginnings of the castle date back to 1266. The castle courtyard surrounded by walls and buildings and the castle covered and strengthened the western flank of the city fortifications. The castle courtyard got its present form in the second half of the 17th century.
The main building, the castle, the oldest part of which dates back to the Gothic period, was rebuilt and significantly expanded during this period.
The building had already been expanded in 1580/81. The beautiful Renaissance portal and the remarkable tubular fountain stand out. Not to be forgotten is the former leaseholder's house, built in even proportions with the magnificently curved gable, as well as the castle gate on the Cent with the same number in the coat of arms.
The former weir and defense system has now become an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. Today the castle houses the administration of the barons Riedesel zu Eisenbach and the Riedesel archives.
The facility is privately owned. A visit is only possible from the outside.

Lauterbach Castle, also known as Lauterbach Castle, is a Renaissance castle that was created from a former castle. It is located in the district town of Lauterbach in the Vogelsberg district in Hesse.

Description
The castle was first mentioned in 1266 when Lauterbach was elevated to town status as a "propugnaculum vel turrim", a "bulwark" or a "fortification tower" to secure the western side of the city fortifications. From 1580 to 1581 the main building, which still dates from the Gothic period, was expanded into a castle with a Renaissance portal and was given a tubular well. The castle has a tenant house with curved gables and a castle gate with a cent and the same number in the coat of arms. The appearance of the courtyard from the second half of the 17th century has been preserved.
