From the Passo del Termine to La Spezia, the Cinque Terre Höhenstrasse stretches. It is protected from through traffic, as both the Via Aurellia and the highway are further inland. Nevertheless, the part between La Spezia and about the height of Manarola has suffered. The construction of a wider street was stopped by locals, so that from Manarola still runs the old road.
This leads a few hundred meters above the sea and offers some spectacular views of the individual Cinque Terre villages, the sea and the partly green, sometimes rugged slopes down to the sea.
Certainly one of the most beautiful sections of Italy. We prefer to drive in the direction of La Spezia, as you always so on the sea side and can enjoy the incredible view down.
Since the steep area is repeatedly affected by heavy rainfall and resulting landslides, parts of the road can be blocked from time to time. Often it is then possible to use an alternative route. At Vernazza this is always the case. You have to know that the detour is a good 400 Hm and above all in the direction of La Spezia road sections with about 18% slope means.
