The wire bridge, whose wire system is suspended from two pylons, was opened to pedestrian traffic on November 1, 1870. The bridge structure was built by Henschel. Because it was initially privately owned, anyone wishing to cross the Fulda had to pay until March 31, 1896: pedestrians paid 3 pfennigs and horsemen paid 3 silver groschen. Since April 1 of the same year, when it became city property, crossing it has been free.
