The castle park is an important, connected, pedestrian recreation area in the old town, but not a garden monument. The entire open space of the castle area became garden land after the former fortress was abandoned in 1780.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Marburg began to design the areas as a park. During and after the Second World War, the areas were again turned into vegetable gardens and then, divided by a simple crossroads, planted with bushes and roses, returned to recreation. The area was still in this state at the time of the new planning and the start of construction in 1981.
The park has idyllic corners, areas of light and shade alternate and create a calming park atmosphere. The old trees, shade shrubs and lush lawns give the castle park its special charm.
Embedded in the park are the so-called 'Meteorological Tower', the large open-air stage, a boules court as well as the rhododendron garden and a perennial garden. The attractive rose garden at the castle is also not a historical site. There have certainly always been roses in the grounds around the castle, but there is no evidence of a rose garden. The area, where around 7,000 roses and 65 varieties now bloom and smell, was once known as "The Racecourse". Tournaments were held here in medieval times. In 1627, the "Judiciary House", which characterizes the square, was built as a grandstand for spectators and probably also as a place for the referee, as the name suggests.
