The ancient settlement of Samos, Precacore, is very close to present-day Samos, and can be easily reached on foot starting from Piazza Municipio, following a suggestive path that climbs up the sides of the slope on which the ruins of the ancient settlement stand.
The name of the ancient village comes from a legend: following a storm that seriously damaged Samos, a woman who survived the cataclysm, looking out from one of the few houses left standing and from which she could enjoy the view over the whole town, she would have exclaimed: “Mom, oh mother, seeing my Samo so destroyed breaks my heart”. It was then that, between history and myth, the name of Samo was changed to Precacore.
It is here that people come on pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of San Giovanni Battista during the feast of 28-29 August.
