      The barns are grain barns, meaning they were only used to store and dry the sheaves of grain from the terraced fields above the meadows. Unlike the granaries, they only have one doorway, which is usually located in the middle. Immediately behind them, the threshing floor extends the entire length of the building. Each owner had his own compartment on the right or left side of the barn, in which he stored the sheaves that had been brought in. When they were dry, they were threshed on the threshing floor. The grain obtained in this way was then carried down the valley and stored in the granaries or ground directly and baked into bread.

          They are called "Alpine deserts" and "arable deserts". In earlier centuries, alpine farming and agriculture were carried out here. At Herbrigg, the fields rose to 2,000 m. They became "deserted" because they had not been used for a long time. Today, a particularly rich alpine flora can be observed in deserted areas. The buildings on Herbrigg show the typical Walser construction style: larch wood barns, placed on stilts and mouse slabs.
